PhD. Enrique Pérez Cruz

Director of CIGB Sancti Spíritus

Doctor in Technical Sciences, specializing in Chemical Engineering, he is a Senior Researcher and First Level Technologist. His work has focused on industrial biotechnology, with outstanding results of academic and economic impact in the development of enzymatic technologies to obtain high value-added products for the sugar and food industries. Marked is his contribution to the development of fructooligosaccharide production technology, from research-development, industrial scaling and product registration, as well as his introduction and formulation of a symbiotic yogurt. He has also contributed to obtaining rapid diagnostics for human and veterinary use, the generation of monoclonal antibodies and analytical systems for pharmacovigilance and pharmacokinetic studies of leading Cuban biotechnology products.

He is the author of more than 30 publications. He has participated in more than 75 scientific events. He is the author of the National Awards of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. National Prize in the Scientific-Technical Contest of the Youth Technical Brigades, 2003. Prize of the Ministry of the Sugar Industry, 2011, of Science and Technology “Technological development of the production of Fructooligosaccharides”. He has received more than 10 awards in Science and Technology Forums. He is a lead author of patents. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the CIGB and of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, of Sancti Spíritus. He is an expert of the National Program of Science and Technology in Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Industry and Medical Technology, Agricultural Biotechnology subcommittee. He has been a tutor and opponent of several undergraduate and master’s theses. He is a lecturer for the Diploma in Public Administration and Business Management.

He was the recipient of the Forjadores del Futuro Seal three times (1996, 2000, 2004), a distinction awarded by the National Youth Technical Brigades to young people under 35 years of age for their contribution to outstanding results in innovation, research and production during a period longer than 4 years. In 2017, he also received it in the Personality category. He was the recipient of the “Abel Santamaría” Medal in 2001, a distinction awarded by the Council of State to young people with an outstanding student and work career. He received the Carlos J. Finlay Order, in 2020, which is awarded to Cuban and foreign citizens in recognition of extraordinary merits and valuable contributions to the development of the natural or social sciences, scientific or research activities, which have contributed exceptionally to the progress of science and for the benefit of humanity, and especially to the preservation and improvement of the health and well-being of the people.
