Interview with Dr. Julio Baldomero Hernández, Director of Clinical Research at CIGB

Upon obtaining health registration, this medication of Cuban scientific excellence, Nasalferon, becomes a product that has set standards from its application during the COVID-19 pandemic to the present, with satisfactory clinical results. Almost the entire Cuban population has already benefited from this medication with the health registration granted by our regulatory agency. This health registration marks a new path for the medication, which can now be obtained in main and community pharmacies in Cuba. This opens new opportunities for the population to access it much more quickly and effectively when its use is needed. As explained, it is a medication aimed at the prophylaxis (prevention) and treatment (or cure) of acute upper respiratory diseases of viral cause. The effects and safety have allowed the Cuban regulatory agency to grant health registration for this medication.
Nasalferon is a very easy-to-use medication: it can be self-administered by the patient themselves and their family members. It is easy to store: between 2 and 8 °C; that is, in domestic refrigerators. It is easy to apply by the patient themselves and their family members: it does not require the intervention of medical or healthcare personnel for its use. Only a prescription from a physician is required, either before or once the viral disease is diagnosed.
Specifically in Cuba, there are seasonal respiratory diseases, very common at certain times of the year, especially during winter, when the population becomes infected with viruses typical of our country or region.
All clinical development of Nasalferon has been aimed at its use in the adult population. Among the projections opened by this health registration, one of the ideas of our clinical research team is to design new studies that can involve pediatric patients, to find out whether the child population can benefit from the use of this medication, which is so effective against diseases that, although very common in adults, are also common in pediatric ages. And timely application in these ages should likewise yield very positive results.
