The other headquarters of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology is founded in the Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus. Cuba succeeds in synthesizing the human erythropoietin gene and obtains the first transgenic fish (carp). The journal Interferón y Biotecnología changes its name to Applied Biotechnology and publishes its first issue . This scientific journal is peer-reviewed, quarterly, dedicated to the dissemination of specialized information generated in the international scientific community in all spheres of modern biotechnology. It collects the advances in the modification of microorganisms, animal and plant cells to produce molecules for medical, veterinary and agricultural applications.
