The first issue of the scientific journal Interferón y Biotecnología was released, which served as a documentary record of the development of research on natural and recombinant human interferon in Cuba, Latin America and other latitudes. It reflected and promoted biotechnology as a field applicable to various facets of human development; hence later, in 1990, it changed its name from Interferon and Biotechnology to Applied Biotechnology.
