New Delhi, April 7: Delhi-based Kee Pharma has introduced Melagenina Plus, a drug for Vitiligo cure, often referred to as leucoderma, in the domestic market. It is manufactured in Cuba.
The company's head (international marketing) Dr Alok Dev told FE that about 2 per cent of the country's population, or roughly two crore people suffer from leucoderma. So while the market potential is huge, they are initially being conservative in their approach and targeting just a few thousand patients.
At about Rs 3,400 per bottle, Kee Pharma hopes to notch sales of about Rs 3.5 crore from Melagenina in the first year. A patient may require one or two bottles, each lasting about two months according to Dr Dev. The dosage required is dependent on factors such as total area and region of the body affected and skin complexion of the patient.
Kee Pharma claims this medication scores over competition in the market as it has no side-effects and is easy to administer. But this medicine cannot cure all forms of the disease, and patients with over 70 per cent body coverage of leucoderma as yet do not have a therapy, according to Dr Dev.
India and Mexico have among the highest incidence of leucoderma in the world, and it is particularly pronounced in the southern India.
This medication has been advised to be taken only when prescribed by a doctor.
